The Bach/Gounod Ave Maria, as it has come to be known, has quite a varied history.
It began life as Bach's 17222 Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV 846 from the Wll Tempered Clavier. Upon hearing the work 137 years later, French composer Charles Gounod improvised a melody to go over the top, which his father wrote down and published in 1853. In 1859 it was published with traditional Latin text of the prayer, "Ave Maria".
Here, the work is arranged by composer Sean Haley for strings, violin solo, harp solo, male chorus, and soprano soloist . Used by permission.
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
