"Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" or "Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming" first appeared in the late 1500s. The author of the text and the melody is unknown. However, the most familiar melody first made its appearance in written form in the Speyer Hymnal of 1599.

In 1609, German Composer Michael Praetorius created a harmonization that stayed with us for the next 400 years. If you know this song from your traditional family carols, you probably know Preatorius' version!

The popular English text "Lo How a Rose E're Blooming" was written by Theodore Baker in 1894.
