Of In dulci jubilo, the composer Neil Anderson-Himmelspach states:

“I am expecting my first child this January, and I was thinking of the peaceful joy I am feeling as I await her birth. I focused the composition on the sweetness of the text. I wanted to portray an image of a more introverted and contemplative joy rather than an outward joyous praise. I thought or Mary holding Jesus for the first time and how that joy was present, but exhaustive after giving birth. The chords are sometimes unresolved and the harmonies are dense and brooding at times, but ultimately, I hope the listener hears the tenderness and sweet joy in the composition.”
